It is difficult to talk about the Palio. Every Sienese feels a stir of nerves when listening to others describe it, because it is so deeply intimate—everyone has their own way of feeling its 'vibes.' Strange? Perhaps. But that is the atmosphere in Siena when the tufa dirt is laid down in the Piazza, and the track is ready to welcome the horses.
Which words could truly describe it? Drama, adrenaline, freedom, joy, community, the scent of the crowds, the roar of the screams... and the fierce desire to win. Simply put: it is something you must experience to understand.
While the horse race happens only twice a year—July 2nd and August 16th—the city breathes it every day. In every district (Contrada), people work tirelessly year-round. The clubs are open, and the Captains are constantly refining their strategies and building the alliances necessary for victory.
Whether you wish to feel the thundering adrenaline of the race itself or dive deep into its ancient secrets during the quiet months, we offer two distinct ways to experience the Palio:
1. The Heart of the Event (July 2nd & August 16th): we create exclusive packages that place you at the very heart of the action. We secure strategic, prime-viewing positions (from private balconies or windows) so you can witness the breathtaking race in comfort, surrounded by the incredible energy of the Piazza.
2. The 'Deep Dive' (The Off-Season): While the race is the climax, the Palio lives in the hearts of the Sienese every single day. If you visit outside of the race dates, you have a different, unique opportunity: to understand the complex machinery behind the glory. We can arrange private encounters with the protagonists—the Captains and the celebrity Jockeys—who, away from the heat of the competition, can share their stories and their strategies.
In any season, we will take you inside a Contrada and the church where the horse is blessed, offering you an authentic 'taste' of this ancient passion."

"The Palio is a complex event, and the cost to attend depends entirely on the level of comfort and exclusivity you desire:
The Piazza (Free): Entry to the center of the Piazza del Campo is free of charge. However, it requires arriving hours in advance, standing in the heat within a very dense crowd, and having a limited view of the track. Young kids are not admitted.
The Stands (Palchi): These are the wooden bleachers set up around the track. Prices for a seat on a palco generally range from €350 to €600+ per person, depending on the position and the visibility of the start (la mossa).
Private Balconies & Windows (Premium): For the most exclusive and comfortable experience, we offer access to private apartments overlooking the Piazza. These positions provide a bird’s-eye view of the entire race, away from the crowds, often including refreshments or a traditional Sienese buffet. Prices for these premium spots can be provided on request.
Note on Booking: Because availability for balconies and stands is extremely limited and managed through private local networks, we recommend booking at least a year in advance to secure the best positions."

Absolutely! In fact, attending the rehearsals—known as Le Prove—is one of the most fascinating ways to experience the Palio. There are six rehearsals in total, held every morning and evening in the days leading up to the race.
The Experience: During the rehearsals, the atmosphere is slightly more relaxed but still incredibly intense. You can witness the jockeys testing their horses and the strategy of the Contrade beginning to unfold.
The 'Prova Generale': The most famous rehearsal is the Prova Generale (the General Rehearsal) on the evening before the Palio. It is followed by the legendary Contrada Dinners, where thousands of people dine outdoors in the streets of their respective districts—a truly unforgettable experience that we can arrange for you.
Access: While entry to the Piazza for the morning and evening rehearsals is free and less crowded than the race day, we can also organize reserved seating on balconies if you prefer to watch the preparation in total comfort.
Insider Tip: Attending a morning rehearsal (at 9:00 AM) is a secret favorite for many. The light in the Piazza is magical, and you can see the deep connection between the horse and the jockey before the tension of the final day takes over."

On the days of the race, your experience depends entirely on your mood and travel style.
Option 1: The Heart of the Action If you choose to stay in the city center, you’ll be immersed in the energy 24/7. You can walk downstairs at any time and be part of the pulse of Siena. Keep in mind: Siena will be crowded, loud, and electrifying. The Sienese people don’t sleep; the celebrations last until the early hours, and everyone is back in the Piazza by 8:00 AM for the morning rehearsal. It is an exhilarating, non-stop experience for those who want to follow every heartbeat of the festival.
Option 2: The Countryside Retreat If you prefer a more balanced pace, you can stay at a charming country inn just a few miles away. You can relax by the pool during the hottest hours of the day and head into town only for the main events.
A Note on Logistics: If you stay outside the city, a private driver is highly recommended. During the Palio days, parking in Siena is virtually impossible and traffic is strictly regulated. Let us handle the transport so you can arrive relaxed and ready for the spectacle."
